Amy + John's Dreamy Door County Beach and Brewery Engagement Session

These two have the absolute cutest first date story: John had finally convinced Amy to meet after talking online for a bit. Amy was sooo nervous, but something told her to give John a chance. John chose a pizza place for their first date location since pizza is his favorite food. They met at the restaurant and both of them couldn’t eat because they were both so nervous. After a few beers, they finally relaxed and had the best time ever. John decided to extend the date and invited Amy to walk around the mall together just like his grandpa used to do with his grandma for their date nights. They finished the night by getting a root beer float (which they now enjoy together on every anniversary).

It wasn’t too long after their first date that John knew he wanted to marry Amy. So he began to craft a proposal plan. John’s grandma invited all of the cousins over for a brunch. Amy was pretty reluctant because she had a migraine and wanted to stay home and watch football. Once at John’s grandma’s house, Amy thought something was up because there was beer and wine being served which was never allowed at grandmas house! John called Amy out to the backyard to play baseball with the little cousins. Once the ball was hit into the outfield, John got down on one knee when Amy’s back was turned. John proposed, and Amy of course said, “Yes!” To top it off, Amy’s family was there to surprise them and celebrate all day!

I was smitten with Amy and John before I even met them in person. We were crafting up their engagement session, deciding what would feel super fun and easy to them. Engagement sessions can be daunting, but when you create a session that involves things you already like to do, or places you love (or know you’re going to love), it makes it easy peasy. Having a goofy, kind photographer helps, too ;)

Amy and John knew they wanted their engagement session to take place in Door County, Wisconsin. Early spring in Door County is truly lovely. It’s early in the tourist season, so most places aren’t crawling with people. Plus, the trees and grasses are starting to come back to life. We started their engagement session at Door County Brewing because who doesn’t want a little liquid encouragement to kick things off?? We chatted about life and all of our dogs before heading to our next spot.

One of the great things about Door County is the variety of photo locations available. There are numerous beaches, both sandy and rocky, so we took advantage of both! We ended our session at Cave Point County Park, one of my absolute favorite places to bring couples for their engagement session or wedding photos. These two laughed together and made each other feel at ease in front of the camera. It can take some time to feel totally comfortable; these two brought their true selves to their session and really let the authenticity and unique flavor of their relationship shine through in their photos.

I asked Amy and John to tell me a little about their relationship, encouraging them to reflect on why it’s so great and why they’ve decided to spend forever together. They said that it’s easy and filled with endless love. Their relationship has just made sense from the beginning. They both admire how hard working and devoted they are to what they love in their individual lives. They are both loyal in their friendships and relationship together. The best thing they love about each other is they can have the most fun whether they are watching football all day on Sunday or going on new adventures. Amy said John’s best quality is pure patience and kindness towards everyone in his life. John shared that Amy’s best quality is she always puts others before herself, she’s great at pushing him to be his best self. They are both so family oriented and their families are such a big part of their life. Not only that, but they are genuinely each other’s best friends.

Being around people who love deeply, cherish their relationship, and have big dreams for the future is so inspirational. Getting to know Amy and John was such a treat, and I know that they’ve left handprints on my heart. I can’t WAIT to photograph their amazing fall wedding at Northern Haus in Door County. Stay tuned for more stunning pictures of these two!

Much love and appreciation,

Kate
