Friday, April 22nd Brews Cruise

Well friends, we've survived another week, although there were times I wasn't sure we'd make it to the end! Tyler and I are in the process of buying a house and man, is it a headache. Home buying has definitely tested of our relationship and patience. I'm lucky that at the end of the day, I've got someone that shares the same values as I do and makes his opinions known. Hopefully we will soon be able to show you our new home! With all of this going on, we certainly needed some libations to ease the stresses.  I don't know about you, but I'm ready to pop open a cold one or two. Without further ado, I would like to present this week's Brews Cruise selections:

Wisconsin Wedding Photography: Sam and Josh

The morning was hazy and warm. Birds sang in the trees surrounding Sam's parents' home, and cicadas chirped out of sight. Rows of empty white chairs were lined up facing a gigantic hydrangea bush bursting with bountiful white blooms. The stage was quietly set for the afternoon outdoor wedding ceremony.

Wisconsin Engagement Photography: Jake and Tiff

I get the chance to work with some of the greatest, most adventurous, most unique clients out there. I love getting to spend time with my couples shooting their engagement sessions, too, because it gives us a chance to get to know one another without the pressures of their busy wedding day. We reach a certain comfort level that goes way beyond the photographer-client constraints.

On Life, Death, and Beer

Last weekend, my parents and I attended the funeral of a family friend's father. Ellis was 98 when he passed, and it was clear how loved he was by everyone in attendance. Pictures of Ellis and his family adorned the room the funeral home had provided. His military history and medals were displayed proudly. Ellis' only grandson gave a beautiful eulogy speaking of Ellis' never-ending adoration and support for his entire family.

Green Bay Wedding Photography: Bill and Brenton

For nine years, Bill and Brenton dreamt about their wedding day. Until recently, these two handsome grooms didn't know if that dream would ever become a reality. July twenty-fifth was a gloriously sunny day filled with promise and love. There was a sense of reverence in the air.  A soft breeze made the wildflowers dance and songs with sweet operatic vibrato filled the courtyard at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Wisconsin Wedding Venue Spotlight: The HollyHock House

On the south side of Kewaunee, Wisconsin, a quaint Victorian house is nested amongst the residential homes. The Hollyhock House blooms with possibility amongst the roses, hostas, and other plants that decorate the property. This place is special to us because next fall, my fiancé and I will be saying our eternal vows in the gardens of The Hollyhock House. We had a chance to sit down with one of the owners and managers of The Hollyhock House, Karen Howlett, and ask her some questions about the seasoned Northeast Wisconsin wedding venue to help inform inquiring brides:

Kewaunee Wedding Photography: Dustin and Krystina

It was a day for recalling old memories and making new ones. Family, friends, and loved ones gathered from near and far to celebrate the love that Dustin and Krystina share. The weathermen had threatened there would be rain on this wonderful day, but there wasn't a menacing cloud in sight.

Door County Wedding Photography: Marissa and Jeff

The wind was relentless, and the sun played peek-a-boo behind the clouds, but Marissa was the epitome of calm and collected. An Door County wedding had been planned, and Marissa's energy was undeterred by the less-than-ideal weather. She was surrounded by her nearest and dearest in a family suite at the Pine Grove Resort as she slipped into her David's Bridal gown. In a suite nearby, her groom-to-be, Jeff, was suiting up for their "first look". The mood at the resort was joyous, festive, and relaxed.

Green Bay Engagement Photography: Fonferek's Glen with Krystina and Dustin

Krystina knew Dustin was "the one" during her freshman year of college. Dustin was coming home from leave, and she remembers how excited she was to see him, a different excitement than she had felt before. Fast forward to this January when Dustin and Krystina went away for a weekend skiing in Houghton, Michigan. Krystina couldn't understand why Dustin was kneeling in a snowbank on the deck of the restaurant where they had just shared a romantic dinner together. Dustin asked Krystina to be his forever, and she happily said yes.

Green Bay Engagement Photography: Sam and Josh

Their friendship sparked years ago, but who could have known the fire that had been ignited? Perhaps it was the way Josh made Sam laugh, or maybe it was the way Sam tossed her long, blonde hair over her shoulder when she turned to look at him. Their chemistry was undeniable, and their hearts soon began to call to each other.

Why I Left a Fortune 500 Company: Cheers to a Better Life

From a young age, I've always envisioned myself as making a difference in this world. Not in an egocentric, rule-the-world kind of way (certain politicians' names have been omitted for their protection), but in more of a Steve Jobs/Ansel Adams/Maya Angelou sort of way. I want to be really good at what I do, I want to help people and the world we live in, and I want to feel good about what I'm doing, morally and ethically. I was very much wandering along my life path until a few years ago when photography came into my life in a burst of color and black and white and film and equipment. It struck my soul with such a quite confidence, I knew I had found my life calling.

Great American Roadtrip 2014: Top Twenty Moments

This fall, Tyler and I took three weeks off and headed out west. I had carefully planned the details of our adventure for almost a year, researching restaurants, campsites, and hikes. I think travel is one of the most rewarding luxuries we afford ourselves.

2014 Roadtrip Restaurant Reviews

For the first dinner of our vacation, we headed into Jackson to the Snake River Grill. I had done extensive online research for the best place to get dinner in Jackson and settled on this location. We arrived early, and the staff was more than happy to seat us before our reservation time. We were brought to a romantic corner booth inside the warm, cozy dining room. I would describe the décor as lodge-meets-NYC with its log siding walls, stone fireplace, and white linens.

September 11th: A Nation Remembers

When children are in school, they will inevitably have to write a report on what their family members experienced growing up, and how life was different back then. I know I had to ask my grandma how the Great Depression affected her childhood. I have a feeling that when my hypothetical grandchildren ask me about my experiences and the significant historical events that took place, they will ask me about September 11th.  Though they're not grand or coming from someone of significance, these are my stories.

Green Bay Wedding: Lauren and Ryan

I have known Lauren for a number of years, simply because I graduated with her younger brother. While Lauren and I were just acquaintances until recently, she has always been an extremely sweet and kindhearted person. It is obvious to see why Ryan was drawn to her.
